WISC-V Overview

What is the WISC®-V?

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children® 5th Edition (WISC-V) is an individually administered Intelligence test for children ages 6-16. Scores from this test are often used as a tool for measuring a student’s ability to enter into a gifted program but can also be used as a clinical tool to diagnose learning disabilities and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Test Format

The WISC-V exam is very closely related to the WISC-IV exam. Both exams test students’ abilities in the areas of quantitative reasoning, working memory, nonverbal, cognitive proficiency, and general ability. Most of the areas of the WISC-IV exam were copied over to the WISC-V exam with minimal updates. Two subtests were removed from the WISC-IV exam due to redundancy. Both tests measure the same skill sets and scores from these two exams are highly correlated. These tests are both administered by a psychologist on an individual (one-on-one) basis and take approximately 65-80 minutes to complete.

How to Prepare

The best way to prepare for the WISC-V exam is by exposing your child to the exam format and the types of questions they will see on the day of the exam. Because of the high redundancy of the WISC-IV and WISC-V exams, Mercer Publishing’s recommends using our full-length WISC-IV practice test to prepare for both the WISC-IV and WISC-V exams. Each practice test booklet contains 1 full-length exam and comes with the answers and explanations. The downloadable versions of our test is available for Mac and PC users.
